One of the most famous kings of ancient Egypt was Akenaton (18th dynasty), the reformer who briefly introduced monotheism and revolutionized religious thought, art and social order. His peculiar personality is evident in the writings of his time. One of his main decisions was to move the seat of government to Akenatfin (the horizon of the disk), now known as the Amarna. This short-lived city in Middle Egypt was the center of the city of Aton, the god of Akhenaten in the shape of a disc of the radiant sun with rays terminated in human hands. It stretched on the east bank of the Nile where the king passed, his farnosa esosa Nefertiti and his sons most of his reign, and probably Tutankhamun was born and spent his first years in it. The city arose in virgin land far from the traditional centers affected by polytheism and prejudice, to adjust to the needs of the Aton religion. El-Amarna was built and decorated in a short time to become a splendid center of worship and culture. Its extension was neatly delimited by 14 cairns (stelae carved in rock) that narrate the foundation of the city. The need to learn as much as possible about Akenaton and its reforms led many experts to excavate the city of el-Amarna. Temples were discovered and the royal palace, connected to the main temple of Aton through a bridge that crossed the road. In the middle of the bridge the king used a "window of figures" to deliver "the gold of merit" (a heavy necklace with gold beads) to his most devoted dignitaries. Luxurious residences were built with pools for the nobility. The sculptors' workshops produced statues of high quality, generally pieces of evidence or unfinished works; among them the lame bust of Nefertiti, in painted limestone, today at the Charlottenburg Museum in Berlin. The city was a center of production of glass and fine pottery, painted in a special blue the blue of the Amarna. Some fragments of painted walls and decorated pavements of the palace show the change in the artistic style that characterizes this period .
