The Citadel of Salah Al-Din is one of the castles built in the style of Islamic architecture during the reign of the Ayyubid state over Egypt, specifically in 1176 AD during the reign of King Al-Nasir Abu Al-Muzaffar Salah Al-Din Al-Ayyoubi. It was completed in 1183 AD. It is one of the most prestigious military war castles built in the Middle Ages. Its location is strategic in the first degree. This site provides defensive importance because it dominates the cities of Cairo and Fustat. It also constitutes a high natural barrier between the two cities. In the case of the siege as it will become the last bastion of the sit-in case if the city fell to the enemy.
The citadel includes the palaces (Al Haram Palace, Al Jawhara Palace, Saray Al Adl Palace and Al Ablaq Palace), Mosques (Al-Nasir Qalawun Mosque, Ahmad Kutkhda Azban Mosque, Sulaiman Pasha Al-Khadem Mosque, Mohammad Ali Mosque), Schools like (Al - Nasir Qalawun School, the Military Castle School, there are other monuments such as Joseph's well, Dar El Darb, the barracks of the Egyptian army, Iwan Farisuddin Aktay, and the castle industry known as the workshops of Bab al-Azab.
