The cemetery was discovered by chance on September 28, 1900, although excavation began in this area since 1892 but was discovered only in 1900.
It was named after Kom al-Shakafa, for the presence of many of the roof and the pottery vessels, the pottery and the fragments that accumulated in this place.

The cemetery consists of three underground rock levels, which were recently reached after the reduction of the groundwater level in 1995 to the second level. The third level is still submerged in groundwater, which is the main problem facing this cemetery.
There are 502 rare archeological pieces in the region, including 39 coffins, 17 Sphinx statues, 156 bases and capitals, and nearly 300 unclassified artifacts.
