The busy port of Nuweiba is a crossing point to (Aqaba in Jordan. In the 1970's, from a barren, isolated area it became a favorite haunt especially with backpackers who stayed mainly in beach huts or Bedouin encampments. In 1985, a highway was built connecting Egypt with the Sinai peninsular in order to increase trade with the countries on the other side of the Gulf of Aqaba. Egyptians came from other areas tQ work here, increasing the population and improving facilities. As tourism increased, hotels were built along the bay and today Nuweiba is an important resort.
